Identifying and mitigating climate risks

The climate crisis has moved past a time for words... a time for action. Many companies are recognizing the potential risk not just to society, but to their immediate and long-term business operations.

ZRS applies a well-established, science-based, data-driven methodology to develop tailored analyses and solutions for your organization. ZRS’ climate risk specialists can help your organization:

  • Identify, assess and quantify current and future climate risks
  • Create targeted resilience plans to mitigate and adapt to climate risks
  • Address climate disclosure requirements, providing assessments in formats aligned with regulatory requirements

Helping protect your business

Understanding climate-related exposures is the first step in jump-starting effective climate resilience plans — whether from an adaptation or mitigation perspective. ZRS offers tailored sustainability services for companies of all sizes and sectors, and our core services include:

A suite of solutions to help businesses:

  • Identify sites with critical natural hazard and climate change risks
  • Assess risks associated with perils like floods, wind and earthquakes across time horizons and climate scenarios to help guide business continuity and supply chain plans
  • Assess risks from local infrastructure vulnerabilities (e.g., power sources, transportation)
  • Develop tailored resilience programs with location-specific actions

Our new Climate dashboard puts your climate data at your fingertips. With this dynamic tool you can:
  • Understand how climate perils (e.g., flood, wind) evolve over different time horizons and global warming scenarios.
  • Filter by country, region or state.
  • Drill down into mission-critical locations to better understand impacts.
  • Rank/prioritize locations based on criticality.

ZRS can help your business understand your carbon footprint and create an action plan, wherever you are in your sustainability journey. Click here to learn more.

Once you’ve identified any climate perils — such as earthquakes, floods and wind — that are significant risks to your operations, a detailed assessment can help your company identify vulnerabilities and quantify impacts to create targeted resilience plans.

We provide holistic and creative solutions for customers’ evolving risk needs including services related to renewable energy, water efficiency and energy audits.

Helping companies take action on their sustainability goals

As they turn sustainability goals into action, ZRS can support customers in:

  • Ensuring implementation of sustainability measures at existing locations does not increase the risk
  • Informed decision making, by identifying sites with significant natural hazard and climate change risks
  • Sustainability reporting in existing frameworks, e.g., TCFD (Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures)
  • Developing tailored resilience solutions (physical, organizational and insurance)

The importance of climate risk management for businesses

The 2023 Global Risks Report ranked “failure of climate change adaptation” and “natural disasters and extreme weather events” as two of the top three risks in terms of severity over the next decade.1 For businesses, this will have a direct effect on their ability to survive and thrive as severe weather events increase in severity and frequency, impacting their people, their facilities, their supply chains and their bottom line.

Businesses also will be under increasing scrutiny from government and regulatory agencies as new climate/energy legislation emerges, and as communities and activists demand greater responsiveness to climate volatility. Building more sustainable operations is not only the right thing to do, increasingly it will be a necessity.

Climate action. Not climate words.

Zurich works closely with customers to tailor holistic solutions for evolving sustainability risk needs. For example, when construction customers began using mass timber in their projects, Zurich was the first insurer to offer coverage, with ZRS developing assessment tools to support these projects. ZRS customers also benefit from Zurich’s broad expertise to address the interconnected risks of climate, supply chain, cyber and workforce exposures.

Zurich has made climate and environmental impact a top priority within our own business practices. These include being the first insurer to sign on to the United Nations’ ’1.5°C target goal of the Paris Agreement, setting a goal for net-zero emissions by 2030, transforming our company auto fleet to all electric or hybrid vehicles by 2025, and sponsoring The Zurich Forest, a major project battling deforestation in Brazil.
