Boiler and Machinery Risk Assessment

Zurich Resilience Solutions

What is a machine risk assessment?

A proactive analysis of current operating practices can help reduce the frequency and severity of losses related to machinery breakdown. This process can include:

Worker
  • Site risk assessments
  • Jurisdictional/MSHA-required inspections and certification of boilers/pressure vessels
    • Quality control certified through National Board of Boiler Pressure Vessel Inspectors
    • Detailed status report of customer’s boiler and pressure vessels (available upon request)

As needed, other review and analysis steps are employed to get as full a view as possible on potential hazards in connection with the use and operation of specific machines and equipment.

Risk mitigation strategies

The experienced Machinery Breakdown Risk Engineers of ZRS take a multifaceted approach to help customers reduce the frequency and severity of equipment-related losses. By providing jurisdictional boiler and pressure vessel inspections, and assessments of key operating equipment, our team can provide guidance for preventive/predictive maintenance, business continuity planning, operational best practices and more.

Preventing equipment failures

ZRS has a number of assessment tools and services that can help prevent costly machinery breakdowns. These include, but are not limited to:

Analysis of physical plant processes and services

Evaluation of objects critical to operation

Plant interdependency studies

Investigation of past equipment failure to determine root cause

Risk management solutions

Zurich Resilience Solutions' (ZRS) Machinery Breakdown team provides three primary services:

ZRS provides inspections to help your business keep essential machinery in compliance with regulatory, statutory and jurisdictional requirements.

  • Jurisdictionally mandated boiler and pressure vessel inspections: Boiler inspections and pressure vessel inspections are required to maintain operational certificates in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the jurisdiction in which the equipment is domiciled. These services are provided by our team of consultants who maintain both National Board of Boiler Inspectors (NBBI) commissions along with associated state required commissions.
  • Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accredited boiler and pressure vessel inspections: Boiler and pressure vessel safety inspections required to maintain operational certificates in accordance with MSHA rules and regulations.

ZRS risk assessments can provide invaluable information related to boiler and machinery condition, carbon monoxide emissions and other business continuity risks that can result in serious damage and associated claims and losses.

  • Machinery breakdown site risk assessment: A proactive analysis of current operating practices and equipment condition can help reduce the frequency and severity of losses related to machinery breakdown. Zurich’s services include analysis and evaluation of plant processes, services, critical equipment, operational and maintenance practices and their impact on equipment and plant reliability.
  • Fuel-fired equipment carbon monoxide (CO) evaluation: An evaluation of CO emissions and the potential for CO accumulation in facility spaces.
  • Business continuity/contingency planning: Plant operational assessment to identify key equipment and process exposures with subsequent guidance in business continuity and equipment breakdown contingency planning.
  • Infrared/thermographic scans of plant equipment: Infrared scans of key electrical equipment identify unseen overheating conditions that could lead to unscheduled down time. Performing periodic infrared scans alert professionals when overheating is occurring or approaching unacceptable temperatures.
  • Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) of transformer insulating fluid: This process measures the presence of, and analyzes gases contained in, transformer oil/fluid/ via gas chromatography to determine the condition of liquid-filled transformers or circuit breakers.
  • Continuous equipment condition monitoring: Monitoring of vibration, temperature, sound and/or power consumption of key rotating equipment to predict operational anomalies to allow preventive and corrective maintenance activities based on real-time equipment condition.
  • Refrigeration interruption and/or contamination surveys: Evaluations of risks associated with spoilage in the event of an unanticipated loss of refrigeration and/or the potential for ammonia contamination resulting from a refrigerant leak.
